Thesis Source Evaluation
It is argued that King Louis XVI wasn't a weak leader, and that he was strong. But events that occurred subsequently to his reign (and during) prove that he in fact was not a strong leader. We will use information gathered from primary and secondary resources to show how his bad leadership skills effected France. Our thesis statement connects to the theme “Leadership and Legacy” because King Louis XVI was a big leader and is very well known now. He is known for his inherently bad leadership skills. All of this information is used in our Thesis Statement which is: King Louis XVI was a weak and inadequate leader who caused France to go bankrupt; subsequently, he sent the economy of France into a deep depression, which caused the French Revolution. His insufficient leadership ultimately ended in his execution. A website will work the best, as it provides a way to organize the events related to King Louis XVI’s reign in chronological order. King Louis XVI wasn’t a tyrant, he just wasn’t fit for the job. He lacked the leadership needed to be the ruler of France, which brought about his legacy. When brought into power, he spent a significant amount of money on luxury goods for the American Colonists. He allowed his wife, Marie Antoinette, and the royal court at Versailles to spend copious amounts of money. In addition he taxed only the poor, who suffered from famine and other adversities. He threw the economy into a downward spiral, eventually ending in his public execution. King Louis XVI was a standing example of how one could send their country and its economy into the ground and have its citizens stage a coup d'etat.
To complete this project, we will make use of primary and secondary resources. When using primary and secondary resources to learn about history, we will evaluate them, and gain information. When reading the resources questions such as “Who wrote this? Why did they write it? Were they writing it to someone in particular?” Etc. One source used was "King Of France Louis XVI,” which was an article that discussed the events that lead up to King Louis' execution. This resource helps is support our thesis statement. Another resource we used, "Marie Antoinette – A Biography" which gave details about Marie Antoinette and her life during the reign of King Louis XVI. This source will help us in proving that Marie Antoinette spent a lot of money during her husband’s power. We had several other sources that will help us prove our thesis statement.
Our project will prove that Louis XVI was a leader that neglected his people and used their money to build his wealth. In doing so he exasperated the already severe economic depression. We will prove this by using evidence from sources.
